2020年1月3日 · Green sea turtles are common around the island, but our coastal waters also harbor its more elusive and rare cousin—the Hawaiian hawksbill turtle. Called honu ʻea or ʻea by Hawaiians, they feed almost exclusively on sponges. Males never come to shore and females only do so in order to nest.

Hawksbills in Hawaiʻi are referred to as Honuʻea or simply ʻea. Hawaiian hawksbill turtles predominately nest on the Island of Hawaiʻi, however a few nests are found on Maui and Molokaʻi each year. It is believed that hawksbill sea turtles reach sexual maturity at 20-29 years old.
