With the coming of privatisation to Britain's railways, new wagon types have been introduced by EWS (HTA), GB Railfreight (HYA), Freightliner Heavy Haul (HHA and HXA) and Jarvis Fastline (IIA).

The HAA wagon (and its derivatives) was part of a drive to improve the efficiency of the movement of coal to power stations. They became the most numerous air-braked wagon type, and quietly went about their business until they were eventually displaced by the closure of many collieries and the introduction of new wagon designs.

They were designed to work in continous rakes from the collieries to the power stations and not to be remarshalled and unloading required specialist equipment to operate the bottom hopper doors.

These new wagons were known as 32 AB HOP and latterly TOPS codes followed, with the standard 45 mph when loaded wagon, being coded HAA. These iconic wagons saw continued service from the 1960s right up until withdrawal in 2009.

Air braked coal & aggregate hopper wagons. Modernisation started with the HAA bulk coal hoppers and 'merry-go-round' operation between collieries and power stations. British Rail adopted the air train brake system for this new fleet of high capacity wagons in captive service.
