SVG can be used for industrial HMI systems in two ways. One is to provide static vector graphics for background images, plans, maps, etc. Because the drawing is a "vector" representation rather than a simple "raster" (also known as a "bit map") image, the SVG graphic can be zoomed and resized without losing any resolution.

SVG is supported by numerous standard drawing packages, and can even be edited directly using a simple text editor.
