Steam & Excursion > White smoke from steam locomotives
White smoke, with locomotives, is condensed water vapor. The greatest contributor is the burning of the fuel, and cool ambient air temperatures. And, yes, with the throttle open, you will have condensed cylinder exhaust up the stack. About 80% of the condensed steam is the products of combustion... just like the con-trails in the sky from aircraft.--- products of combustion are …

UP 6344 in all over grey - Trainorders.com
The grey above the red stripe looks slightly different; maybe the rest IS primer. That being said, I think the Scotchlite that UP uses is applied over the yellow, then a clearcoat is applied. At any rate, I predict she'll be yellow before long. That is a neat looking loco, though.
The Best and Worst Paint Schemes
GN sky blue scheme was absolutely awful no matter what they put it on. GN F's orange and green was a classic scheme. Best GP scheme I think is T&P's swamp holly orange and back a shown on GP-7 #1114 attached. It looked great on NW-2's and SW's as well. Edited 1 time (s). Last edit at 08/30/09 17:19 by tomstp.
Old GE locomotive outside Spokane, Washington
Tried to check out the Spokane, Spangle and Palouse Ry in Marshall, WA but could not get close without trespassing and settled for some telephoto shots of the power from a road east of the tracks. While checking out their GPs I saw a grey GE U-boat. I could not see much detail, but it looked like an old U series not a Dash 7.
