Winter was known for his high-energy blues rock albums, live performances, and slide guitar playing from the late 1960s into the early 2000s. He also produced three Grammy Award -winning albums for blues singer and guitarist Muddy Waters. After his time with Waters, Winter recorded several Grammy-nominated blues albums.

GRAMMY-nominated blues guitarist Johnny Winter died July 16 in Zurich, while in the midst of a European tour. No official cause of death has been disclosed. He was 70. Lauded for his lightning-fast riffs, Winter took up guitar at an early age while his brother, fellow GRAMMY nominee Edgar Winter, learned keyboards and saxophone.
