The Gui po (Chinese: 鬼婆; pinyin: guǐ pó; lit. 'old woman ghost') is a ghost that takes the form of a peaceful and friendly old woman. They may be the spirits of amahs who used to work as servants in rich families.

2024年6月15日 · What makes a ghost a Gui Po? A ghost becomes a Gui Po when it is driven by malevolent intent, seeking to harm the living and disrupt the natural order. Gui Po are often characterized by their grotesque appearance, supernatural powers, and a thirst for revenge.

While most of the supernatural denizens of Chinese mythology flit between the mortal realm and the heavens, Gui Po remains bound to the earth, for she is the venerable custodian of the final resting places.

The yin component, po, is associated with the grave, and the yang component, hun, is associated with ancestral tablets. At death the components split into three different souls; the po stays with the body to the grave, another goes to judgment, and the hun resides in an ancestral tablet.
