Its midrange and treble are remarkably low in coloration. There is no hint of hardness, and none of the loss of inner detail common to transistor amplifiers.

The Adcom GFA-555 is a full-size, handsomely styled amplifier. Its front panel, decorated with a pattern of horizontal striations, has a large rocker-type power switch and a small red led pilot light at the lower left.

In our tests it was clear that the Adcom GFA-555II is a formidably powerful amplifier, much more powerful than its 200-watt rating would imply, and that under most conditions of use it has remarkably low distortion even by the standards of today's amplifiers.

Introduced in 1985, the original GFA-555 was the subject of a rave review in Vol.8 No.4 from the patrician Anthony H. Cordesman, who felt that its natural presentation of upper-octave detail and its "extraordinarily holographic" imaging might well make it a "legitimate rival" to the Krells and Audio Researches of this world.
