Helobdella is a genus of leeches in the family Glossiphoniidae, the freshwater jawless leeches. They occur worldwide. [1] These are small, flat leeches which do not feed on blood. [2] Several species in this genus are used as model organisms in the study of developmental biology. [1]

Leeches are segmented parasitic or predatory worms that comprise the subclass Hirudinea within the phylum Annelida. They are closely related to the oligochaetes, which include the earthworm, and like them have soft, muscular segmented bodies that can lengthen and contract.

In most cases piscine and endemic flat leeches (glossiphoniids) were gathered directly in captured living hosts. Fish, molluscs and amphipods were collected by scuba divers at a depth of 2–42 m and by dredge or fishing gear at 30–200 m.

British freshwater leeches are most easily identified by examining the head shape and eye arrangement, lengths are in mm of fully grown leeches at rest. There are 16 British freshwater species. Ryncobdellidae - these have a proboscis, colourless blood and no jaw.

Herter (1968) introduced the name "two-eyed flat leech" for the type species H. stagnalis. However, all species of the genus Helobdella described so far have a flattened body and two eyes (Elliott & Mann 1979, Saw-yer 1986).

Context: The freshwater flat leech Helobdella europaea Kutschera, 1987 is a small annelid indigenous to South America. This invasive species feeds on the haemolymph of host aquatic invertebrates, with occurrences reported from Europe, USA, Taiwan, North Africa, Hawai'i, Australia and New Zealand.
