For those that aren’t familiar with “eddies,” by definition it means “a circular movement of water, counter to a main current, causing a small whirlpool.” A term regularly associated with trout fishing, a trout angler often targets the slow, circulating water along a riverbank or behind boulders in a run of rapids.

2022年10月20日 · What is an eddy in a river for fishing? Eddies. River eddies occur where fast moving water is forced around an obstruction that protrudes into the water from shore. A sand bar, large boulder or a fallen tree can cause eddies. These obstructions cause a vortex of water to flow back upstream as the water is forced around the object.

Presenting a nymph or visible dry fly on a dead drift that passes through an eddy can be an incredibly effective method for hooking large fish in good numbers throughout the day of fly fishing. When reading a river or stream, look for large exposed rocks or submerged logs and you’ll probably spot an eddy.

Pick your fishing location based on where you notice most of the food flowing. Fish don’t want to work too hard for their food; therefore, if you let the current push your bait into the eddy, you’ll have a better chance of getting it in front of a hungry fish’s mouth.

We have found the two most effective spots to fish from are: Location 1. Within the main current, slightly downstream. This is completely dependent on the river you are fishing. In large/medium rivers with deep fast main flows, this is likely not an option... unless you want to go for a swim 😜 .
