Urmia Lake (NW Iran, 37°29′49″N, 46°00′34″E, 1275 m.a.s.l.) has long been considered the second largest hypersaline lake in the world and, until three decades ago, the largest land-locked body of water in Iran. The lake and its unique associated habitats were incorporated in the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance in 1975.
