Enryaku-ji (延暦寺, Enryaku-ji) is a Tendai monastery located on Mount Hiei in Ōtsu, overlooking Kyoto. It was first founded in 788 during the early Heian period (794–1185) [1] by Saichō (767–822), also known as Dengyō Daishi, who introduced the Tendai sect of Mahayana Buddhism to Japan from China.

Located in Kyoto 's eastern mountain range on Mount Hieizan (比叡山), Enryakuji (延暦寺) is one of the most important monasteries in Japanese history and the headquarters of the Tendai sect of Japanese Buddhism. Many influential monks studied at Enryakuji, including the founders of a number of later sects, such as the Pure Land, Zen and Nichiren sects.

Enryaku-ji Temple is said to be one of the main spiritual centers of Japanese culture. An ancient monastery complex atop Mt. Hiei-zan, it is a richly atmospheric place with old temples and artifacts, misty ravines and towering cedars, and a long, fascinating history.

Mt. Hiei Enryakuji Temple is actually the collective name for more than 100 buildings within its grounds. The temple houses 10 national treasures and over 50 Important Cultural Properties of Japan. Mt. Hiei Enryakuji Temple was constructed in 788 by Saicho, a man born on the shore of Lake Biwa who developed his talents as a monk at an early age.
