Elstow Abbey was a monastery for Benedictine nuns in Elstow, Bedfordshire, England. It was founded c.1075 by Judith, Countess of Huntingdon , a niece of William the Conqueror , and therefore is classed as a royal foundation.

From 1075 until 1539 AD, Elstow was home to a thriving Benedictine Nunnery -Elstow Abbey. The present day Parish Church is the remaining half of the former Abbey church. At the rear of the church are the ruins of 'Elstow Place', a mansion formed out of the nunnery cloisters by Sir Thomas Hillersden 4th, after the death of his father in 1632.

What we see today is only a part of the original abbey church. At the height of its wealth in the 14th century the nunnery church was twice its current size. Like other monastic institutions, Elstow Abbey was dissolved at the Reformation by Henry VIII.
Elstow Abbey was a Benedictine foundation. The Order of St Benedict was one of several “Orders” in the Middle Ages and included such as the Congregation of Cluny, the Cistercians and the Trappists.
