The Emergency Alert System (EAS) is a national warning system in the United States designed to allow authorized officials to broadcast emergency alerts and warning messages to the public via cable, satellite and broadcast television and AM, FM and satellite radio.

The EAS was developed as a method for the President of the United States to give a message to the nation within 10 minutes, in the event of a national-scale emergency. It is also used to give severe weather warnings, as well as local emergency messages.

In 1997 the Emergency Alert System (EAS) was designed for the President to speak to the American people in a national emergency. EAS messages contain a digitally encoded header, attention signal, audio announcement and digitally encoded end-of-message marker.
