Baal gives more experience, and the drops are of better quality. However, he's much more difficult than Diablo for a caster-Blood Mana will destroy you. Conversely, Diablo is slightly easier with ranged/magic attacks than melee, but the gap is almost negligible. Go with Baal if you're a melee fighter, Diablo if you're a caster.

when's a good time to be starting Nightmare? - Diablo II
Though I usually run around 41-49 baal runs by myself to get more exp on full rooms. If you want to run in a party it takes a around 40% more runs to get the same exp due to the sharing. Normal is the only area it is benefitial to do this in as the amount of exp vs time gets shifted in NM/Hell so you are better off doing it in a party.
