DV (from Digital Video) is a family of codecs and tape formats used for storing digital video, launched in 1995 by a consortium of video camera manufacturers led by Sony and Panasonic.

To play back a Mini DV tape without a camcorder you will either need to purchase a Mini DV player, pay a video transfer service to convert the tape to a digital format for you, or buy/borrow another MiniDV camcorder. There are no MiniDV tape adapters.
