DESQview (DV) is a text mode multitasking operating environment developed by Quarterdeck Office Systems which enjoyed modest popularity in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Running on top of DOS, it allows users to run multiple programs concurrently in multiple windows.

DESQView, from Quarterdeck, was a DOS application multi-tasker and in later versions functioned as an X client for applications on remote UNIX systems. It competed against IBM Topview. The original DESQ was just a task switcher, but subsequent versions offered preemptive multitasking of well behaved DOS programs on real-mode 8088 PCs.

DESQview/X includes a program that overrides the Windows 3.1 video, keyboard, and sound drivers to turn Windows 3.1 in to an X-window application!. Because it is an X application, it can even be run remotely from other X11 systems such as Unix or Linux systems.

DESQview/X was a product of a now-defunct software company called Quarterdeck. Quarterdeck was bought by Symantec, which no longer supports this product. For many people, DESQview/X is simply an X11R5 X-server. It turns any DOS-based 386-or-above PC into an X-terminal. It's more than just an X-terminal, however.

By juggling the CPU time between different programs this way, DESQView could give the illusion of running multiple programs simultaneously on hardware that was originally designed for a single task at a time.
