Although long-term durability of early Wankel engines wasn’t great, the M35 program proved enough of a success for the Citroen GS Birotor to use a similar, albeit twin-rotor design–under 1,000 were made.

Comotor SA was a joint venture between NSU and Citroën, created in Luxembourg in April 1967. Its goal was to produce Wankel engines. It followed an earlier, 1964 joint venture of both companies, the Geneva-based Comobil subsidiary, focusing on the development of the engines. Comotor engines were used by the Citroën M35 and by the GS Birotor.

Citroën’s cars would use Comotor’s engines. In 1970 Citroën’s first Wankel car appeared: the single-rotor M35, a small 2-door based on the existing Ami-8. The four-speed, front-drive M35 was sold only in France to high-mileage drivers for the equivalent of $2,740 as an experiment.

Er leistete 36 kW (49 PS) bei 5500/min, das max. Drehmoment von 70 Nm lag bei 2745/min an. Das reichte für eine Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 144 km/h und eine Beschleunigung aus dem Stand auf 100 km/h in 19 s. Da das Comotor-Motorenwerk noch nicht fertig war, wurde der Motor in Neckarsulm hergestellt.

2022年4月21日 · Comotor as a Franco-German cooperation. In fact, Citroën also worked on the rotary engine based on the Wankel principle, although they never signed an official license agreement with the rights holder at NSU. Instead, this cooperation existed with the Comotor company from Luxembourg, in which Citroën held shares.

Elle va être la version hautes performances de la voiture de milieu de gamme de la marque aux chevrons. On la reconnaît à ses ailes élargies.

La Citroën M35 Prototype de 1970 est une voiture relativement rare et peu connue de la marque française. Il s'agit d'un modèle de coupe sportive basé sur la plate-forme de la Citroën GS, avec un moteur rotatif Wankel à deux rotors.

Comotor engines were used by the Citroën M35 and by the GS Birotor. In 1969 the company purchased a large 850 000 m² plot of land at Altforweiler, half an hour to the east of Luxembourg in German Saarland [1] in order to build a factory. The venture was hamstrung by technical, reliability, and fuel consumption issues.

Citroen GS birotor. From 1973-75 Citroen built 873 Citroen GS cars with a twin rotor 1990cc Wankel engine built by Comotor the NSU-Citroen joint venture. The project failed because of engine reliability, poor fuel consumption, bad oil consumption and pollution levels.
