The CODAL runtime provides an easy to use environment for programming a number of devices in the C/C++ language, written by Lancaster University. It contains device drivers for hardware capabilities supported on a number devices, and also a suite of runtime mechanisms to make programming an embedded device easier and more flexible.

The Codasip Architectural Language (CodAL) is a proprietary architecture description language developed by Codasip. It is specifically designed to simplify the process of describing and customizing instruction processors’ architectures, including both embedded and application/Linux-capable class cores.

The CODAL runtime is formed of many libraries, the library common to all CODAL targets is known as codal-core. This library contains common drivers, abstractions for common drivers (driver models), the scheduler and eventing mechanisms, central to the CODAL experience. Libraries are simply collections of C/C++ files to be used in the final binary.
