I have tried more expensive pva type glues (titebond and Lee valley glue) and the problem is much worse. I regularly glue up blocks of White pine, Mahogany, Sapele, and Poplar, the Cedar is the only wood I have had a problem with. The Cedar boards are used in an industrial process that glue colour does not matter.

The top will be a single 2" thick slab of red cedar, it has a little of the white color at one edge of the table. I would like a finish that will not discolor the white or red part, something very clear and durable. Am considering poly, if so should I seal it first?

2006年9月1日 · The cedar is supposed to be more resistant to insects and wood rot, but that may only be for cypress heart wood. Home Depot sells cedar, and the price for cedar is less than cypress. Then again, different species of cedar may have different characteristics.

2003年7月17日 · Port Orford Cedar, if that's what you have, is a very nice cabinet-grade wood. That's good stuff, you're lucky if that's what you have. Can't remember if that one's a true cedar (Help, Jon!). But the soft wood with the aromatic smell that's commonly sold at lumber yards as "cedar" is good for outdoor furniture. It is surprisingly strong.
