The fluid is normally clear. It has the same consistency as water. The test is also used to measure pressure in the spinal fluid.

CSF analysis includes tests in clinical chemistry, hematology, immunology, and microbiology. Usually three or four tubes are collected. The first tube is used for chemical and/or serological analysis and the last two tubes are used for hematology and microbiology tests.

Physician collects a total of 5 to 20 mL CSF into 3 or 4 sterile tubes. The tubes MUST BE LABELLED as to the order of collection (i.e. #1, #2, #3).
