One Royal Hudson, No. 2860, was later used in excursion service. A class H1e Royal Hudson, it was built for the CPR by MLW in June 1940. It was the first locomotive of five to be built new as a Royal Hudson and delivered with painted cast-brass crowns affixed to its skirts.

On March 29th, the Southern Pacific pilot had climbed into the cab of the streamlined 4-6-4 at Bakersfield.

The CPR Royal Train ran from Quebec City to Vancouver by way of Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary and Kamloops. 2850 was precluded from use from Quebec City to Montreal due to lighter track. Manned by 25 different engine crews on its cross-Canada trip, 2850 performed flawlessly.

In 1973 Joe W. Hussey sold the CPR 2860 to the Provincial Government who decided to restore the locomotive to operating condition & run it as a tourist train on the Government owned BCR.

Canadian Pacific 4-6-4 No. 2860 was the first of the final group of Royal Hudsons, the H1e class of five members erected in 1940 by Montreal Locomotive Works. This class had the same general specifications as the preceding H1c and H1d classes, but was somewhat heavier at 366,000 pounds and had slightly less superheating surface at 1542 square feet.
