As mentioned above, the CCL log is used for depth control and depth correlation. In deeper wells, operators sometimes install one or more short casing "pup joints" as recognizable depth markers. Because perforations in casing or tubing can frequently be detected with a CCL tool, the CCL log is sometimes run for verification or proof of perforating.

The Casing Collar Locator (CCL38 & CCL41) is used in cased hole for positioning measurement by responding to the changes in metal volume. The CCL detector consists of a coil and four magnets. The four magnets are installed in pairs at the upper and lower ends respectively so that the coil is in a constant magnetic field.
