Adding 50 ppm to water with a pH of 7.5 and initial TA of 80 ppm will lower the pH to 7.3 so even adding enough boric acid to increase borates to their maximum recommended amount doesn't lower pH very much.

It does seem to help keep them away from the pool without killing them. It doesn't work for everyone though. Wasps are generally beneficial, so I would avoid pesticides too.
