Bog-wood (also spelled bogwood or bog wood), also known as abonos and, especially amongst pipe smokers, as morta, [1] is a material from trees that have been buried in peat bogs and preserved from decay by the acidic and anaerobic bog conditions, sometimes for hundreds or even thousands of years.

Today, we’re talking about a distinct type of petrified bog wood that goes by many names. It is only found near McDermitt Nevada and was first mined by Gary McIntosh and Ray Larson - so you can call it McDermitt Jasper, or Gary Green Jasper, or Larsonite.

Bog Oak, much like Brown Oak, is not a specific species, but is rather a term that designates oak that has been buried in a peat bog for hundreds or sometimes thousands of years.

What is bog oak and bog wood? Six to seven thousand years ago forests of oak, yew and pine grew where these bog lands are now today. The remains of those forests are found 4.5m to 6m deep in the bogs. These trees have undergone a great chemical change over the years.

With the advent of turf production and land drainage these ancient Bogwoods can be found. we gather these Bogwoods of oak and yew from the peat lands of Ireland and take them back to our studio where they go through a slow process of drying.

Bogwood is just wood from fallen branches and tree trunks. It would float initially, but over time it takes on water, becomes water-logged and sinks. Once underwater it’s used by many catfish species to hide under during the day, many of them mimicking the wood pattern and shapes as part of their camouflage.
