Pinus wallichiana is a coniferous evergreen tree native to the Himalaya, Karakoram and Hindu Kush mountains, from eastern Afghanistan east across northern Pakistan and north west India to Yunnan in southwest China. It grows in mountain valleys at altitudes of 1800–4300 m (rarely as low as 1200 m), reaching 30–50 m (98–164 ft) in height.

Scientifically known as ‘Pinus wallichiana’, the blue pine belongs to the genus ‘Pinus’. It is a majestic coniferous and evergreen tree found in the higher altitude regions of 2000 m to 4000 m. These magnificent trees are also referred to by the names Himalayan white pine, Bhutan pine, Himalayan pine, Himalayan blue pine, and Pinus wallichiana.

It was first described by botanist Nathaniel Wallich of the Kolkata Botanical Gardens after whom the binomial name of this tree is given. The blue pine tree has a high level of resistance to air pollution, being able to withstand it much better than most other coniferous trees.

Pacific Blue Macedonian Pine. Beautiful blue needles are long and thin, and densely cover Pinus peuce ‘Pacific Blue’. Selected from a group of P.p. ‘Glauca’ seedlings for its pleasing color. Multi-year needle persistence makes for a thick and full specimen with good form. Native to SE Europe, it is very cold and wind tolerant.

Regarded by some as the most beautiful pine species, Pinus wallichiana (Bhutan Pine) is an elegant evergreen conifer of broad-pyramidal habit with horizontal lower branches and slightly ascending upper branches. Old specimens usually retain their lower branches.
