In taking the 1971 European Cup Winners’ Cup, the 2012 Champions League and the 2019 Europa League Chelsea joined an illustrious band of sides to have achieved the feat. To date, only Ajax, Bayern Munich, Juventus and Manchester United sit with the Blues on that distinguished list.

Their opening fixture came in the first qualifying round, a resounding 6-1 victory over the British Army’s 1st Grenadier Guards. That first cup run ended in the third qualifying round but just nine seasons later, in 1914-1915, Chelsea reached their first FA Cup final, a 3-0 defeat by Sheffield United at Old Trafford in Manchester.

Firstly under Ruud Gullit and latterly under Gianluca Vialli, Chelsea had an excellent 1997/98 season winning two trophies, one of them being the Cup Winners’ Cup. In beating Slovan Bratislava (4-0), Tromso (9-4) and Real Betis (5-2) over two legs, Chelsea’s passage to the semi-finals proved to be rather easy.
