It is the capital of the Bjelovar-Bilogora county, and the natural, cultural and political centre of the area. Bjelovar sits at an intersection of roads in this area: the D28 intersects with the D43, and it lies on the road between Zagreb and west Slavonia, Podravina and Osijek. Bjelovar is currently being connected by dual carriageway with Zagreb.

Jedan je od mlađih gradova u Hrvatskoj, nastao 1756. godine, odlukom carice Marije Terezije. Planski je građen kao poligon i upravno sjedište Križevačke i Đurđevačke graničarske pješačke pukovnije.

Bjelovar-Bilogora County (pronounced [bjêloʋaːr-bîloɡora]; Croatian: Bjelovarsko-bilogorska županija [bjêloʋaːrsko-bîloɡorskaː ʒupǎnija]) is a county in central Croatia. The central city of Bjelovar was first mentioned in 1413, and it only gained importance when a new fort was built in 1756 to defend against the Ottoman invasions.

Located on a plateau in the southern part of Bilogora, 135 meters above sea level between the rivers Bjelovacka and Plavnica, the city of Bjelovar is the center of the Bjelovar-Bilogora County as well as the cultural, political and natural heart of this part of Croatia.

Bjelovar is a city of culture. The town has 3 memorials commemorating the country’s troubled past (Croatian War of Independence, World War II), and is also home to the BOK theater, which is famous for its plays. On the sports side, Bjelovar is known for its devotion to handball.
