Belphegor (or Baal Peor, Hebrew: בַּעַל-פְּעוֹר baʿal-pəʿōr – “Lord of the Gap”) is, in Christianity, a demon associated with one of the seven deadly sins. According to religious tradition, he helps people make discoveries.

In doing so, he found a particular affinity for Paris, France. He is a shape shifter, delighting in using this ability to deceive mortals. His most common forms are polarized in their appearances.

Belphegor comes from the biblical name Baal-Peor, who is the God of the Moabites. The story is that when Israel owned the northeast corner of the plains of Moab, the Israelites would have illicit relations with the Moabite women and would sacrifice them to their god. Moses punished by death the Israelites who had sacrificed to Baal-Peor.
