SD1 provides practical guidance to ground specialists on the assessment of ground in respect of aggressiveness to concrete, and to concrete designers, contractors, specifiers and producers on the specification of concrete to resist chemical attack. Guidance is given in Parts B to F as follows.

The Building Research Establishment (BRE) has recently revised Special Digest 1 “Concrete in aggressive ground”. This new edition (SD1: 2005), funded by The Concrete Centre, was published as a single volume in June, following the completion of a four year research programme on combating the thaumasite form of sulphate attack (TSA) .

On 12 June 2005, BRE published, Concrete in aggressive ground (SD 1), written by the BRE Construction Division. Chemical agents found in the ground can destroy concrete. In the UK, these agents are most commonly sulfates and acids that occur naturally in soil and groundwater, and can cause the expansion and softening of concrete.
