While the original cube-based concept was preserved, the ‘2’ logo traded its multicolour wardrobe for a singular, eye-catching shade of blue. And to add a dash of live-theatre drama, the cube’s rotation was executed in real-time, making each spin a must-see event.

Serving as a fertile testing ground for cutting-edge comedy and eclectic arts programmes, BBC Two was the launchpad for what were initially considered “niche” shows, many of which eventually earned a promotion to the primetime slots of BBC One.

Originally broadcast around 11pm, on 1st January 1968 it was moved to 7pm and extended to a full 30 minutes, The programme was axed on 29th December 1972. News Extra replaced Newsroom on 1st January 1973, and continued to be BBC 2 30min news bulletin.
