The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress is an American four-engined heavy bomber aircraft developed in the 1930s for the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC). A fast and high-flying bomber, the B-17 dropped more bombs than any other aircraft during World War II, used primarily in the European Theater of Operations.

The B-17C was the first version of this bomber which obtained Royal Air Force (British air force RAFs). The 20 copies which arrived in England at the beginning of 1941 were called Fortress I there. They led their first mission under No 90 squadron on July 8th, 1941.

These aircraft were used to equip two bombardment groups, one on the Atlantic coast and one on the Pacific coast, making the B-17B the first Fortress to equip operational Air Corps units.
