Roku doesn't pay any heed to the avatar cycle, he bullies this dude who's clearly traumatized from what he had to do in the fire nation military into teaching the avatar. Roku is so consumed with guilt that he tries to force a man to help aang against the grain of the cycle which ultimately hinders aangs development. Roku is a poor teacher.
