Aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) is a superfamily of enzymes that detoxify a variety of endogenous and exogenous aldehydes and are required for the biosynthesis of retinoic acid (RA) and other molecular regulators of cellular function.

Increased expression and activity of ALDH isozymes have been reported in various human cancers and are associated with cancer relapse. As a direct consequence of their significant physiological and toxicological roles, inhibitors of the ALDH enzymes have been developed to treat human diseases.

Aldehyde dehydrogenases (ALDH) (EC 1.2.1.3) are a family of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (phosphate) (NAD (P)) dependent enzymes, typically with a molecular mass of ca. 50–60 kDa.
