The C628 was Alco's first in its line of six-axle, C-C road switchers. Overall these behemoths were as powerful as they appeared, which is perhaps ironically a significant reason why the American Locomotive Company (Alco) did not sell more of its six-axle Century line.

This is a historical article about the Century 628 locomotives manufctured by Alco Products in Schenectady beginning in 1963. These 2750 horsepower locomotives were sold to freight railroads, though they were designed to be able to be used for passenger service, as well.
