Due to its geographical position it is the natural end of dispersion of species from north and south, so it is a sample of the most representative of the ecological wealth of the country with scientific research value. Its biodiversity is very rich in land and sea, endemic or endangered species (cats and birds) species.

It is currently the largest park in Costa Rica and extends over about a third of the Osa Peninsula. The park has the largest primary forest on the American Pacific coastline and is also one of the few remaining sizable areas of lowland tropical forests in the world.
