1999年6月，AMD推出的K7架构处理器比K6更加强势，其主要技术来自DEC公司强大的服务器处理器Alpha 21264，并使用了Alpha架构的EV6总线。 与之前的绝大部分非Intel处理器不同，K7架构拥有超越Intel处理器的浮点能力和频率潜力。

第一款Athlon處理器屬於AMD的第七代（K7），與當時英特爾的Pentium III處理器競爭，及後出現Athlon XP、MP等。 現時最新的Athlon處理器有屬於 Zen 架構的Athlon APU系列。

K7系列CPU是AMD公司推出的高性价比CPU，又可以细分为：采用“Thunderbird雷鸟”核心，L1 cache为128KB/L2 cache为256KB，200MHz前端总线的Athlon系列CPU（后期也有采用266MHz前端总线的Athlon出现）；采用“Spitfire烈火”核心，L1 cache为128KB/L2 cache为64KB，200MHz前端总线的Duron系列CPU ...
