Officially designated the Avenger II, the A-12—shown in an artist’s concept—was named in honor of the Grumman TBF and General Motors TBM Avengers of World War II fame.

The type exhibited all sorts of technological advancements that would have made it one of the finest naval aircraft anywhere in the world, however, the project was doomed by ballooning costs and lack of progress.

The design began as the A12 specification in 1936, as a gun-armed counterpart to the first British infantry tank, the machine gun armed, two-man A11 Infantry Tank Mark I. The Mark I was also known as Matilda, and the larger A12 was initially known as the Matilda II or Matilda senior.
