The Chukchi are an ancient Arctic people who chiefly live on the Chukchi peninsula, or Chukotka. The Koriak also inhabit the southern end of the Chukchi peninsula and the northern reaches of the Kamchatka peninsula. The Nivkhs inhabit the island of Sakhalin and the Amur River Valley.

The Chukchi can be divided into two clearly distinct groups: the inland Chukchi, who herd reindeer and refer to themselves as "Chavchu" (rich in reindeer), and the coastal Chukchi, also known as "An'kalyn" (coastal dwellers), who primarily depend on sea animal hunting.

Like many indigenous tribes, the Chukchi have a rich history of folkloric and ritualistic traditions.
