The Korea Defense Service Medal is retroactive to the end of the Korean War and is granted to any service performed after July 28, 1954. The National Personnel Records Center is responsible for verifying entitlement of the KDSM to discharged members of the military who served in South Korea prior to the creation of the KDSM.

Included in the National Defense Authorization Act of 2003 and codified as Public Law 107-314, the Korea Defense Service Medal (KDSM) can be rewarded retroactively for service dating back to 28 July 1954.

To be eligible for the KDSM, personnel must have been physically present in the stated areas for 30 consecutive or 60 nonconsecutive days, or must meet one of the following: -Be engaged in actual combat during an armed engagement, regardless of the time in the areas of eligibility
