On 8 December 1793 Madame du Barry was beheaded by the guillotine on the Place de la Révolution. On the way to the guillotine, she collapsed in the tumbrel and cried, "You are going to hurt me! Why?!" Terrified, she screamed for mercy and begged the watching crowd for help.

Amongst the exhibits on show were lifelike wax figures of the decapitated Louis XVI and his queen made from death masks that Madame Tussaud herself made after their executions. Madame Tussaud had known Maria Antoinette from her work in wax in pre-revolutionary times when she and her mentor had created models of the living royal family.
