2015年11月8日 · Toss has a more casual, lighter, connotation than throw which is a more powerful and deliberate action. One tosses a towel to one's club mate in the dressing room, but out on the field of play one throws the ball hard in from the boundary. Toss to me always suggests an underarm movement, whilst throw involves the full overarm action.

2017年9月12日 · @industry7 Interesting. I didn't know that was known in American English. Yeah it's not inappropriate really though it is considered vulgar technically. It's more appropriate (probably) than tosspot and tosser is more rude. There are a lot of meanings to toss in British English and it's used in some phrases too (toss off, [don't] give a toss etc.).

In the British use of "don't give a toss," "toss" is a euphemism for masturbation, which indirectly infers the F-bomb. Americans don't draw a connection between "toss" or "tossing" and anything even remotely sexual, but typically will use the F-bomb in the same construction.

However "Toss out" is a bit wordy for casual conversation. You can simply say "toss". In that context others should understand you intend to dispose of the item. The word "pitch" tends to put an emphasis on the emotional component of the act of disposing of the item. Toss is used when you simply wish to be rid of the item.

2018年2月9日 · The two are related but by no means synonymous. "Toss and turn" is a fairly literal description of the activity -- moving about restlessly. You may "toss and turn" during your sleep, or the activity may prevent you from sleeping (though the latter is the more common use). –

As far as the coin toss goes, it is far from recent. Cross and pile was played in England for many centuries. The cross was the major design element on one side of many coins, and the pile was the bottom part of the die used to cast the 'cross' side of the coin.
