Then I tried the import and it just ignores me when I click "import" after selecting the PNG file. If I select other files with the PNG file, import imports everything but the PNG file. This is new behavior with 10.4.10.

You should also be able to open them with the Preview app simply by double-clicking the file. There is nothing particularly special about a typical .png file.
