Despite their appearance, zebras aren’t just black and white. They are sturdy, spirited animals that are a study in contrasts: willful and playful, social and standoffish, resilient and vulnerable. Their life in a herd can be complex, yet they also find safety in numbers.

There are four species of zebra: Plains, Grevy’s, Cape Mountain, and Hartmann’s Mountain. The Plains Zebra, on exhibit at The Maryland Zoo, is the most common and geographically widespread. It is also known as the Common Zebra or Burchell’s Zebra. Plains Zebras roam Africa’s grasslands and venture into woodland and marshy areas as well.

Grant's zebras live in stable family groups of up to 17 animals headed by a single stallion. (Sometimes two stallions are part of the group, but one will be dominant.) Mares stay with the group; offspring leave. Females establish a dominance hierarchy.

Grant’s Zebras are the smallest subspecies of the Plain Zebra. There are three zebra species: Plains Zebras, Mountain Zebras, and Grevy’s Zebras. Zebras are equids, meaning they are members of the horse family. Unlike other equids such as horses and donkeys, zebras have never been successfully domesticated.
