In September of 1962 the Air Force awarded North American a contract to modify a T-28A airframe with a 2,445 hp Lycoming YT-55L-9 turboprop engine with the designation of the prototype YAT-28E (NAA model 284). To install the Lycoming engine on the T-28A the entire nose section forward of the firewall was redesigned.

The North American Aviation T-28 Trojan is a radial-engine military trainer aircraft manufactured by North American Aviation and used by the United States Air Force and United States Navy beginning in the 1950s. Besides its use as a trainer, the T-28 was successfully employed as a counter-insurgency aircraft, primarily during the Vietnam War.

Turbine Powered T-28 North American Prototype The YAT-28E was built by North American Aviation between 1962 and 1965. This 2,595 shp Lycoming powered turboprop was one of three produced and the only surviving example.

The YAT-28Es had a 12.7-millimeter Browning gun in a gondola under each inner wing, and six stores pylons under each wing, plus a wingtip rail for a Sidewinder air-to-air missile. They had an internal fuel capacity of 948 liters (250 US gallons), and could carry a 417-liter (110 US gallon) drop tank on each inboard stores pylon.

The YAT-28E prototype was developed to replace the T-28D in the COIN role and made its first flight on 15 February 1963 with North American test pilot George Hoskins at the con- trols. I have one of the original professional models of the YAT-28E aircraft built by Topping, Inc. for North American Aviation. This model was produced during the development of the #1 aircraft. The model is green with a tail No. of 0-21242. The model is fully loaded with arms and fuel tanks, and is in mint condition.

A further conversion, the YAT-28E was flown on February 15, 1963. This incorporated a 2450shp Lycoming T55 turboprop, and added a further six hardpoints. However, only three were completed. TheT-28 has no formal military connections with New Zealand.
