TBS originated as a terrestrial television station in Atlanta, Georgia that began operating on UHF channel 17 on September 1, 1967, under the WJRJ-TV call letters.

It is owned by Gray Media and its sister stations are CBS affiliate WANF /channel 46 and Telemundo affiliate WKTB-CD/channel 47.

Public television station WGTV/8 had only been on the air since May 1960, and there were virtually no receivable UHF signals within the area. Enter Jack M. Rice, who had owned the Rice Coal Co. since 1950 and also held the market franchise for wired pay-TV service International Telemeter, which was targeted to begin operation in the fall.
