Whitehorse (French pronunciation: [wajtɔʁs]) is the capital of the Yukon, and the largest city in Northern Canada. It was incorporated in 1950 and is located at kilometre 1426 (Historic Mile 918) on the Alaska Highway in southern Yukon.

White Horse Lake is windy for geographical reasons. The place is surrounded by mountains except in the north where there is a gap as wide as one fourth of a kilometer, like the wide open mouth of a bag, ready to accept the wind.

As the cool weather arrives, the festival calendar heats up with dog sled races, music and film festivals, curling bonspiels and hockey tournaments. One of winter’s most noteworthy events is the world-renowned Yukon Quest Sled Dog Race.

One of our most popular exhibits is Chief White Horse’s Winter Count. This intricate reproduction is truly a beautiful piece of history. It was originally narrated by Chief White Horse to Florence Thwing in 1910. The meticulously recorded narrative is now preserved at the Timber Lake and Area Museum for generations to come.
