Sir William Jones FRS FRAS FRSE (28 September 1746 – 27 April 1794) was a British philologist, orientalist, indologist and judge.

Sir William Jones (born Sept. 28, 1746, London—died April 27, 1794, Calcutta) was a British Orientalist and jurist who did much to encourage interest in Oriental studies in the West. Of Welsh parentage, he studied at Harrow and University College, Oxford (1764–68), and learned Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, and Persian.

While serving as a judge of the high court at Calcutta, he became a student of ancient India and founded the Asiatic Society of Bengal.
