Sep 25, 2010 · Your 45/70 is a excellant hog gun. Just do not use Rem. or other light 300 gr. hollow point bullets. I use a Hornady 350 gr. FP bullets or cast 350 gr. bullets and they will punch all the way though a pig and drop him.

Apr 22, 2012 · That being said, if you really think the opportunity at a 300-400+ pound BOAR is there, no doubt you need a 45-70. Use a factory load at 0-75 yards. Use something more at BIG hogs and longer ranges. Big hogs are something special and one needs to be ready. This is a 400+ pound wild hog. Best of luck!! Ed

Dec 2, 2014 · If you're using a 45-70 for hogs I wouldn't even worry about the BHN... but if you air cool rather than water drop it will expand plenty. If you have higher velocity it will expand more than with lower velocity. Lower velocity it will probably penetrate slightly more... It also depends on the size of your hogs.

Nov 26, 2008 · i use a marlin 45-70 specifically for hog hunting. i have always tried to take head shots on hogs with any rifle but the 45-70 gives me more confidence if i have to take a shoulder shot. i ussually dont have to track them even with a shoulder shot.
