Sep 25, 2010 · Your 45/70 is a excellant hog gun. Just do not use Rem. or other light 300 gr. hollow point bullets. I use a Hornady 350 gr. FP bullets or cast 350 gr. bullets and they will punch all the way though a pig and drop him.

Factory .45-70 loads from Remington, Federal and Winchester have a muzzle velocity around 1,800 fps. These cartridges are deadly on hogs out to 150 yards. Trajectory with a 100-yard zero is minus 7 inches at 140 yards and 12 to 30 inches low at 200 yards, depending upon load. Other loads made for strong actions have been introduced in recent years.

I've used everything from bulk 300 grain hollow points to cast 530 grain Postells in a Ruger No. 3 and H&R Buffalo Classic. IMR 3031 and RX 7 have been my favored powders. All told though, I like the 300 grain HPs with a less-than-top end dose …

Apr 22, 2012 · That being said, if you really think the opportunity at a 300-400+ pound BOAR is there, no doubt you need a 45-70. Use a factory load at 0-75 yards. Use something more at BIG hogs and longer ranges. Big hogs are something special and one needs to be ready. This is a 400+ pound wild hog. Best of luck!! Ed

Dec 15, 2002 · In the 45-70, I prefer a Hornady 350 roundnose over 48 grains of IMR 4198. This will rip em good in a classic broadside lung scenario, kill em proper with a raking shot, and will bust BOTH shoulders and clean out everything in between!

Dec 2, 2014 · If you're using a 45-70 for hogs I wouldn't even worry about the BHN... but if you air cool rather than water drop it will expand plenty. If you have higher velocity it will expand more than with lower velocity. Lower velocity it will probably penetrate slightly more... It also depends on the size of your hogs.

In addition to .30-30, lever actions from Marlin have been (and are) chambered to .35 Remington, .444 Marlin, and .45-70—all awesome hog guns. Want to drop a hog with dramatic authority? Try a .45-70.

Lengthwise penetration with a shot under the chin on the charging boar dropped him so his snout plowed into the ground. Here is my load. Nov 26, 2008 · i use a marlin 45-70 specifically for hog hunting. i have always tried to take head shots on hogs with any rifle but the 45-70 gives me more confidence if i have to take a shoulder shot. i ussually dont have to track them even with a shoulder shot.
