WIIC-TV signed on in 1957 as Pittsburgh’s third VHF station. The licensee was WIIC Incorporated which was a cooperative of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (owner of WWSW) and Pittsburgh Radio Supply House (owner of WJAS).

WPXI is a local station based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania that broadcasts on digital channel 48, displayed on digital tuners through PSIP as 11. Its subcarrier, 11.2, runs MeTV. WPXI went on the air as WIIC-TV on September 1, 1957. On April 20, 1981, the call letters were changed to WPXI (P for Pittsburgh, XI being the Roman equivalent of 11).
