2010年10月6日 · WAKR-TV was retained by the Berk family and renamed WAKC/23, and was eventually sold off to ValueVision in 1994. Today it is Cleveland-targeted ION O&O WVPX/23, with its’ master control at WKYC/3’s digital broadcast center. Of course, WAKR went through much turnover in the late 1980s and early 1990s upon the dismantling of Group One.

WAKC (Channel 23) had a new owner, Paxson Communications, and one of that owner’s first acts was to kill the news. That was just part of a systematic dismantling of what had been the most Akron-centric station in the region.

On leap year day 1996, Akron news went dark as the station's new owner shut down the evening broadcasts. 40+ years of broadcasting history tossed out when a business group decided to turn out the lights.

2015年10月24日 · It moved to a stronger signal on Channel 23 in 1967, but still struggled financially. A major problem was that much bigger stations from Cleveland served the Akron area. Viewers watching ABC programming on WAKR often assumed they were watching it on Cleveland’s WEWS-TV. Akron was not a separate TV market.
